Why the paperwork waits until you want paying
Almost everybody who has been asked for documents by a gambling company was asked shortly after requesting money, and almost nobody was asked with the same urgency while depositing. That timing is the most complained-about feature of the whole industry and it has a structural explanation that is worth understanding before it happens to you rather than during. Incoming payments carry little risk for the business and can often be reversed through the payment scheme; outgoing payments are final, land in somebody else's hands and are the moment at which a firm's obligations about identity and source of funds become expensive to have neglected. So the checking clusters at the exit. This page sets out what the checks consist of, what each of them is actually for, and the small number of things you can do in advance that turn a review from a months-long correspondence into a short one.
The four checks, and what each is really asking
These are the standard categories for firms licensed in Great Britain. They are not brand-specific, and we have not been through any of them with this operator β we hold no account and its site has never responded to us.
Who you are
Identity confirmation against an official document, usually with the requirement that the name matches the account and the payment instrument exactly. Discrepancies here that a person would call trivial are the ones an automated match rejects outright.
Where you live
Address confirmation, ordinarily through a recent document from an institution rather than something you produced yourself. Its purpose is jurisdictional as much as anything: which licence and which rules apply to your account depends on where you actually are.
Where the money came from
Evidence of the origin of funds is an anti-money-laundering requirement rather than an accusation, and it typically escalates with amount. This is the check that most often produces a request for bank statements, and it is lawful for licensed firms to make it.
Whether the spending is sustainable
An affordability or responsible gambling review considers whether the level of play is consistent with means. A documented July 2026 case saw one triggered by a payout request on an Β£8,000 win, when no such concern had been raised over roughly Β£20,000 lost across the two preceding years.
Straight answers
What can I do in advance to make this faster?
Three things, all of them boring and all of them effective. Make sure the name on the account, the name on the payment method and the name on your identity document are identical rather than merely similar. Keep the registered address current, including after a move, since a stale address is discovered at the worst possible time. And know where your recent statements and identity documents are, so that a request can be answered the same day rather than the same fortnight. None of this prevents a review; all of it shortens one.
Is it normal to be asked for bank statements?
It is normal, and the discomfort is also reasonable. Firms licensed in Great Britain carry obligations to establish the source of customer funds and to consider whether spending is sustainable, and satisfying those can require financial documents. What is properly contestable is proportionality and timing rather than the request itself. If you think a request goes beyond what is needed, say so in writing, comply with the part that is clearly required, and keep the correspondence β that combination preserves your position without leaving the funds stranded.
Why is a check running now when my account is years old?
Because checks are triggered by events and thresholds rather than by age. A first large withdrawal, a change of payment method, an unusual pattern of play or a periodic review can all set one off on an account that has been quiet for years. It is not evidence that something was previously overlooked and it is not usually a sign of suspicion. It is the point at which the account crossed a line somebody drew in advance.
What if a review simply stops responding?
Then move it out of the support channel and into the formal one. Put the history in writing, state clearly what was requested and when it was supplied, and file it as a complaint through the operator's published procedure rather than continuing to ask in chat. Only the formal route builds the record that an independent adjudicator can later look at, and stages beyond the operator generally expect that route to have been used first. Repeating the question in a chat window creates no record anybody else can read.
